The modern world prides itself on an illusion of continuous upward progress. Humanity is told that it has broken free from the crude, overt bondages of ancient history. We look back at the monuments of ancient Egypt—the towering pyramids, the colossal statues, and the vast temple complexes—as relics of a long-dead era where a single, tyrannical monarch physically whipped millions of slaves to build his personal sandbox. Modern society, with its smartphones, global telecommunications, democratic voting booths, and corporate human resource departments, views itself as fundamentally liberated from that primitive past.
