Before a trap can snap shut, it must first be camouflaged. It must blend seamlessly into the everyday scenery so that the prey walks directly into its jaws without a single thought of danger. In the opening pages of the holy scriptures, the Apostle of Deception is introduced with a single, defining characteristic: "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made" (Genesis 3:1). He did not arrive with a loud roar or an open show of force; he slid in through the cracks of human perception with quiet craftiness, a hidden agenda, and a twisted whisper. That ancient, subtil strategy has never changed.
