From Spiritual Infancy to Sonship: Why Knowing the Father Changes Everything

For many in the church today, prayer follows a repetitive, comfortable rhythm. We direct our cries, our needs, and our worship exclusively to Jesus. While this feels intimate, a deep dive into the words of Christ reveals a sobering reality: Jesus never designed our faith to stop at Him. He died and rose to give us direct, unhindered access to the Father.

When we insist on treating Jesus as the final destination of our prayers rather than the Way, we remain stuck in a state of spiritual infancy. We fail to develop the personal relationship with God the Father that Jesus specifically commands us to build. The truth is, many in the church remain children because they have never been placed as mature sons—and they haven't been placed as sons because they simply do not know the Father.

The Shift from Child to Placed Son (Huiothesia)

To understand why so many believers are failing to mature, we have to look at the original Greek language of the New Testament. In the King James Version, we often see the word "adoption." However, the exact Greek word used by the Apostle Paul is υἱοθεσία (huiothesia), which literally means "Sonship" or "the placing of a son."

In biblical times, there was a vast difference between a child and a mature son:

  • Teknon (A Child by Birth): This is a toddler or minor. Even if they are the natural heir to a massive estate, a young child has no legal rights, no authority, and cannot run the family business. They are kept under tutors and governors.
  • Huios (A Mature Son): When the child reached the proper age, the father would hold a formal, legal ceremony to transition them into huiothesia—the positioning of a mature son. At that moment, the son was given the father’s ring, the authority of the father's name, and full access to the father's assets.

The tragedy in the modern church is that millions of believers are born again as teknon (children), but they never transition into huios (placed sons). They stay spiritual minors.

The Root Cause: You Cannot Be a Son to a Stranger

Why is there such a lack of mature Sonship in the church? Because you cannot be legally placed as a mature son if you do not intimately know the Father.

A father in the ancient world would never hand over the keys to his estate or his legal authority to a child who didn't understand his heart, his business, or his character. Sonship requires relationship.

Jesus did not come to earth to draw attention to Himself. His entire mission was to reveal and introduce us to the Father. He stated this clearly in His high priestly prayer:

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” — John 17:3 (KJV)

When we bypass the Father and refuse to build a direct relationship with Him through the Spirit, we cut ourselves off from the very intimacy required to grow up.

"In That Day": The New Era of Prayer

This lack of maturity directly impacts our prayer lives. Spiritual children pray like infants—they rely on an intermediary to talk to the Parent for them. But Jesus explicitly commanded us to move past this dynamic during the Last Supper:

“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.” — John 16:23 (KJV)

"In that day" refers to the era after the resurrection, when the Holy Spirit would indwell believers. Jesus was telling His disciples that the days of tapping Him on the shoulder to ask for things were over. A new era was arriving where they would have direct access to the Father.

He reinforced this a few verses later:

“At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father himself loves you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.” — John 16:26-27 (KJV)

Jesus is explicitly clear: I am not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf. You don't need Me to beg Him for you, because the Father Himself loves you directly.

Operating in the Authority of His Name

When you know the Father and are placed into mature Sonship, your prayer life completely transforms.

Praying "in Jesus' name" is no longer a magical phrase tagged onto the end of a selfish request. Instead, it is an expression of your position, submission, and nature. It means you have become one with Christ, you abide in Him, and you are stepping into the Father's presence wearing the legal authority and character of the Son.

A servant or a child has to stand outside the door and ask a mediator to go inside for them. A mature, placed son walks straight into the room, sits at the table, and speaks directly to the Father.

It is Time to Grow Up

If your prayers feel unanswered, or if your spiritual life feels stagnant, look at who you are addressing. Are you still treating Jesus like a buffer because you are afraid of, or unfamiliar with, the Father?

Jesus is the door, but the Father is the destination. The veil has been torn. The Spirit of Sonship has been given so that we can boldly cry out, "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15). It is time to stop acting like spiritual orphans, invest the time to truly know your Heavenly Father, and step into the full authority of mature Sonship.
